Itinerarys
Lunch in Mbale, then continue to Budadiri (base town for Mount Elgon treks).
Hike through Bamasaba villages and farmlands.
Pass through the “Wall of Death” (steep rock face with ladders).
Arrive at Sasa River Camp (2,900m) for dinner & overnight stay.
Hiking time: 7-8 hours
Less steep, but altitude starts to take effect.
Arrive at Mude Camp (3,500m) by mid-afternoon.
Relax, hydrate, and acclimatize for the summit attempt.
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Early start (around 5 AM) for summit attempt.
Hike through moorlands and open plains to reach Wagagai Peak.
Enjoy views of Caldera, Kenya, and Uganda from the summit.
Descend back to Mude Camp for overnight stay.
Total hiking time: 7-9 hours
Return to Mbale, then drive back to Kampala.

About This Hike
Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano located on the Uganda-Kenya border, is one of East Africa’s most rewarding hiking destinations. Standing at 4,321 meters (14,177 feet), it is the 8th highest mountain in Africa and boasts the largest volcanic caldera in the world—spanning about 40 kilometers in diameter. Unlike other high-altitude hikes, Mount Elgon offers a less crowded and more serene trekking experience, making it perfect for nature lovers.
